Every week I photograph people who are changing careers. Not one of my clients has defined their career move as a “resignation.” On the contrary. They call their desire to change jobs or even careers a “reprioritization.”
If you are one of the millions of people who have decided to take advantage of the hot job market, you will likely need new headshots. Adding a new headshot to your on-line profile, let’s the world know that your direction has changed!
Here are a few things that job seekers should keep in mind when considering a new headshot:
- Current headshots are always better than older headshots, especially as you age! Do not use an older headshot. Styles change, and let’s face it, you have changed. Nothing makes you look older than a younger headshot!
- Dress for the interview in your headshot. If the office attire is shirt and tie, wear a suit in your headshot. For jobs that are casual or require uniforms, opt for dressy casual in your headshot. Uniforms are great in headshots, but only once you have the job!
- Consider headshots as an investment. Just as you hire someone to help you brush up your resume, hiring a professional headshot photographer will help you to make a better impression.
- DO NOT use selfies taken in your car as headshots! Repeat after me, “I will not post selfies taken in the car as headshots.” What the car selfie says to the world is, “I was getting out of the car and noticed that I looked great!” It does not say that you mean business.
- Finally, a great headshot should look like you on your best day: natural, powerful, genuine, and approachable! Find a photographer who can achieve this “in camera” and you have found your headshot photographer.
I am so excited for your journey and can’t wait to hear about what your dream job will be!
