I put out some lavender on the patio in hopes of attracting some bees. No bees came. I bought more lavender. And then I bought a little bit more, believing that I must need a critical mass to be found by the bees. Finally, one bee miraculously located my plants, communicated back to the hive, and within days my patio became a honey bee haven.
And just like that, I became part of an ecosystem. This little ecosystem, to oversimplify, has three players: the bee, the lavender and the gardener. The bee takes the nectar and the pollen to produce honey so that the hive will survive. The flower needs the bee to pollinate in order to reproduce. And the gardener gives flowers to the bees in exchange for a few beautiful photos. Each of us is giving and each of us is taking. But everyone benefits. I was thinking about how in my own life there are times that I am the bee, the lavender, or the gardener. I suppose that I am all of those at different times — giving and taking, taking to produce, producing to give.
You get where I am going with this I am sure. Life can flourish when we find the right ecosystem where we all intend the best for each other and our actions back it up.
This is just a little something I was thinking about while looking at my lavender. Stay tuned for more lessons learned as I observe the little things in life.
