Are you an attorney, an animator or an accountant? Are you a doctor, a dentist or a banker? Whatever your profession, headshots are a great way to present yourself to the world. Here are a few tips to consider once you have booked your headshot session.
- First a jot down all of the uses you will have for your headshot: Book covers; press releases; Linked-In profiles; company intranet; business cards; personal social media profile; social media posts; advertising; brochures; the list of possibilities is truly endless.
- For each use, list your audience. Are they potential clients? And how would you like for them to perceive you? If you are a medical doctor or psychologist, they will want to know that you are smart, perceptive and thoughtful. Are you an attorney or a realtor fighting for your clients’ best interest? They will want to know that you are tough as nails.
-Take your list above and begin to plan a few “looks” and keep it simple! Your looks will consist of hair, makeup and wardrobe.
- Hair should be “done” but not “overdone.” Fix your hair as you would for an important meeting, but not as you would for your wedding. We work with amazing stylists who are available upon request.
- Makeup, though important in headshots, should not be the star of the show! Use makeup sparingly so that YOU are the star and would be recognizable from your headshot. We do have an incredible makeup artist who is available upon request.
-Choose your colors carefully. Do you normally wear black, red, gray, blue or green? What is the color of your “brand?” Think simple and timeless and you can’t go wrong. Lot of stripes and patterns will distract from your face — so unless you are in the business of selling “busy” fashion, stick with solid colors.
-Bring a few different wardrobe changes, “looks.” It is fun to photograph you in your workday attire — whether it is a chef’s coat, or a lab coat, utility belt or uniform as well as more casual and more dressy looks based on the targeted audience for your headshots.
-Finally, try to get a good night’s sleep the night before. I have yet to meet anyone who wasn’t a little nervous before a headshot session; so remember, I have your back! Just try to rest easy, avoid salty foods and alcohol, and I will make sure that you look your best!
See you in the studio! ;)
